Your Questions, Answered

  • Royal Canine Dental provides non-anesthetic dog dental cleaning for small breeds under 25 pounds who:

    • Are in overall good health

    • Receive routine veterinary care

    • Are up to date on vaccinations

    • Do not currently require extractions or advanced dental procedures

We specialize exclusively in small dogs because their size allows for a safe, controlled, and stress-aware experience during sedation-free dental cleanings.

We do not accept French Bulldogs. While we adore them, their brachycephalic (short airway) anatomy and muscular structure make non-anesthetic dental cleaning less predictable from a safety standpoint.

Your dog’s well-being will always come first.

  • For safety and medical integrity, the following dogs are not appropriate candidates for our services:

    • Dogs over 25 pounds

    • Dogs requiring extractions or surgical dental procedures

    • Dogs with loose teeth, abscesses, advanced periodontal disease, or severe gum recession

    • Dogs with cracked teeth exposing pulp

    • Dogs with significant heart, liver, kidney, or respiratory conditions

    • Dogs who are aggressive, biting, or unable to be safely handled

    • Dogs who are not under regular veterinary supervision

If we observe signs of dental disease beyond surface tartar during our initial assessment, we will pause the appointment and refer you to your veterinarian.

Royal Canine Dental provides above-the-gum-line cleaning only. We do not diagnose, treat, or cure dental disease. We do not perform extractions, surgery, or procedures requiring anesthesia.

This service is preventative maintenance — not medical treatment.

  • No.

Extractions must be performed under anesthesia by a licensed veterinarian with proper diagnostic imaging and monitoring.

If we identify a fractured tooth, mobility, infection, or signs of periodontal disease requiring medical intervention, we will refer you directly to your veterinarian.

Your dog’s health will always take priority over completing a cleaning.

  • When performed on appropriate candidates, sedation-free dental cleaning for small dogs can be a safe and effective maintenance option.

Each dog is carefully evaluated before we begin. If at any time your dog shows signs of excessive stress, discomfort, or medical concern, we will stop immediately.

    There is:

    • No anesthesia

    • No sedation

    • No hospitalization

    • No below-the-gum procedures

Our focus is calm handling, professional hand scaling, and above-the-gum plaque removal to support ongoing oral health between veterinary dental exams.

  • Your dog will receive a gentle, stress-aware experience designed specifically for small breeds.

    • A calm environment

    • Soft blanket wrapping for comfort and stability

    • Hand scaling of plaque and tartar above the gum line

    • Continuous observation for stress signals

Many small dogs tolerate this beautifully when approached with patience and care.

There are no loud machines, no sedation, and no extended separation from you.

  • We do not.

If your dog has a history of biting, extreme anxiety, or defensive behavior during handling, sedation-free dental cleaning is not appropriate.

We prioritize emotional safety as much as physical safety. If we determine the experience would cause distress or risk, we will decline the appointment.

  • We understand the instinct to remain close to your pet.

However, dogs often behave differently when their owner is present. They may become protective, distracted, or more reactive, which can compromise the calm, controlled environment required for safe dental cleaning.

For that reason, we do not allow owners to remain in the cleaning area during the procedure.

Rest assured — your dog is treated with patience, professionalism, and the same care we give our own.

  • No.

Royal Canine Dental provides preventative, non-anesthetic dental maintenance for small dogs. This service is intended to complement — not replace — routine veterinary exams and anesthesia-based dental procedures when medically necessary.

We strongly recommend ongoing veterinary evaluations to monitor periodontal health, underlying disease, and conditions that require diagnostic imaging or anesthesia.

If your veterinarian recommends anesthesia for medical reasons, that recommendation should always be followed.

  • At Royal Canine Dental, each appointment time is reserved exclusively for your dog. Because we operate by private booking and limit daily appointments to ensure a calm, unrushed experience, payment is required in full at the time of scheduling.

    Rescheduling Policy

We understand that life happens. If you need to reschedule your appointment, we are happy to accommodate you with at least 48 hours’ notice prior to your scheduled appointment time. Your payment will be applied to your rescheduled visit.

    Cancellation & No-Show Policy

Appointments canceled or rescheduled with less than 48 hours’ notice, as well as missed appointments (no-shows), are non-refundable.

When a time slot is reserved, that appointment is removed from availability for other clients. Late cancellations or missed appointments prevent us from offering that time to another dog in need of care.

    For that reason:

    • Payments are non-refundable within 48 hours of the scheduled appointment

    • No-shows forfeit the full appointment fee

This policy allows us to maintain a boutique, appointment-only experience and ensures fairness to all clients.

We appreciate your understanding and respect for our time — just as we respect yours.

  • For most small dogs, we recommend non-anesthetic dental cleaning every 6 to 12 months, depending on:

    • Your dog’s age

    • Breed predisposition

    • Overall health

    • Diet

    • And the consistency of your at-home dental care routine

Small breeds are especially prone to plaque and tartar buildup due to jaw size and tooth crowding. Even with regular brushing and dental chews, professional cleanings help prevent the progression of periodontal disease.

If you are brushing regularly and maintaining strong at-home dental hygiene, your dog may only need maintenance cleanings once per year.

If plaque accumulates more quickly, every 6 months may be more appropriate.

We are happy to assess your dog’s oral health and recommend a customized maintenance schedule designed to support long-term dental wellness.

As always, we encourage routine veterinary exams to monitor gum health and determine if anesthesia-based dental procedures are ever medically necessary.

Preventative care today helps avoid invasive procedures tomorrow.

  • No. I am not a licensed veterinarian, and I do not represent myself as one.

Royal Canine Dental provides non-anesthetic, above-the-gum-line teeth cleaning services only. I do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medication, perform extractions, administer anesthesia, or conduct surgical procedures.

    If your dog has:

    • A cracked or fractured tooth

    • Loose teeth

    • Signs of infection or abscess

    • Advanced periodontal disease

    • Or any condition requiring medical intervention

You will be referred directly to your licensed veterinarian.

Our services are strictly preventative and cosmetic maintenance — designed to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup between routine veterinary dental exams.

This is supplemental oral hygiene care, similar in concept to how a dental hygienist supports a dentist. It does not replace professional veterinary evaluation, diagnostics, or treatment.

We strongly encourage every client to maintain an ongoing relationship with a licensed veterinarian and to follow all veterinary recommendations regarding their dog’s health.

Your dog’s safety, health, and well-being always come first.
